I first read Emil’s columns in Asian Week during the 1990s while in college, later working with him as reporters in Stockton. I knew of the radio and TV stuff, and am occasionally reminded that we both are from San Francisco and attended the academically-focused Lowell High, though at different times.
Seeing him in a show combining the personal side of this in a small setting is very inspiring. Both for those who enjoy the stories of others, and have ones to tell of their own.
In surprising ways, this show gets at questions of how legacy and success are defined, motivate us, undermine us, and define us. Emil Guillermo is down-to-earth, ironic, and goofy — always willing to take on serious topics with hilarious humor. Big fun and thought-provoking.

Guillermo wisely avoids playing the “victim card” in relationship to cultural discrimination and offers insights into other groups that have been marginalized in society.
