What a delightful way to spend an hour. Howdy, Stranger is an exceptionally delightful one act play. Full of heart. Touching and poignant. Singing delightfully through the big themes in life of right and wrong. Of love and friendship. Of parents and children. All of it packed into a funny, inventive, recursive story that is oh so clever. Medicine for the soul. Full of love and laughter for the heart. And full of clever twists and turns for the head. Heartily recommended.

This one-person extravaganza leaves you in awe (and laughter), as Torrens embodies a cast of characters that make you forget you’re watching just a single performer. Written and starred by Luca Torrens, the show’s premise sounds familiar, but this show takes unexpected turns. Jean isn’t just a cowboy searching for validation from a stern Sheriff; they’re on a journey of self-discovery, grappling with morals, acceptance, and the complexities of being queer in a world dominated by tradition and that sometimes feels as vast and uncharted as the Wild West. With a flick of a wrist and a twang in their voice, Torrens morphs into a charming array of characters. Buttermilk, the trusty horse sidekick, steals scenes with puppetry and personality that will have you believing horses can indeed converse in more than neighs. Furthermore, Torrens’ beautifully sung melodies capture the essence of the different characters’ struggles and triumphs, creating a melodic journey that resonates.

Howdy, Stranger is a lot of fun. Buttermilk is an awarding winning Best Supporting Actress and a heck of a horse. Cowboy Music and a little bit of magic on the open range. Luca Torrens plays all the characters and picks a mean guitar.

A tender, funny coming of age tale set against the backdrop of the mythical old west, inventively presented by Luca Torrens as Cowboy Jean, with faithful horse Buttermilk. Luca’s charm and original songs keep us entranced through this quest for respect via displays of vulnerability not typically found in the rugged, testosterone laden domain of cis/het American masculinity. Refreshingly subversive without being abrasive. Be sure to catch the final SF Fringe performance on Thursday, 8/17.

Adventure in the old west never sounded so good. I really enjoyed the story and found the character fascinating. The songs presented throughout were fabulous, and stuck in my head. Maybe offer a cd of the tunes for sale

HOWDY, STRANGER, is a one person (plus hobby horse) cowboy adventure- with songs. Torrens constructs a good yarn, following the traditional structure of a good fairy tale while reinventing some of the cliches and archetypes along the way, building to first one twist, then another. Their delivery is consistent, often amusing, and always engaging. Their singing voice is strong and clear, and the songs are tight, lyrical, and capture the ambience of a cowboy tale so well that one wishes there were more of them. Still, with simple but appropriate props and costumes, and aided by touches of light and sound, Torrens sets a tone and whisks you away, however briefly, to the open plains and a simpler time of horses, trains, magic, and mystery.

I wasn’t really one for one person shows but this changed my mind. Loved every second of it, and I only hope that the rest of the world gets to appreciate this piece of theatre.

Cowboy contemplation: Luca Torrens plays the SF Fringe FestivalGo west, young them!
A gregarious spirit of pioneering and possibility animates “Howdy, Stranger” creator-performer Luca Torrens’ solo show, which they describe as “a transmasculine Western.”
“It’s like a live cartoon,” said Torrens, 23, describing the 50-minute show in an interview with the Bay Area Reporter. “It’s a little ridiculous and I loooove doing it.”
The musical tall tale of a cowboy named Jean who wants to be a lawman but has an aversion to gunplay feels a bit like “Pee Wee’s Playhouse,” but sweeter and more sincere. Beneath its silly surface, Torrens has incorporated themes with strong personal resonance.
“I’m not sure whether Jean is a guy or is transmasculine —which is what I consider myself— but he’s definitely queer … more at https://www.ebar.com/story.php?ch=events&sc=arts_events&id=327312

I was hooked from the very beginning and my jaw DROPPED in the end. It is an incredibly fun story with peppy music, original yet familiar content, and to this day, I’m just so glad I have Howdy,Stranger in my memories. This one person show is a MUST WATCH!!!!

Hilarious, Captivating, and Exciting. I simply can’t express how much I enjoyed this show. I was so engaged and having a blast being along for the wild ride. I’m sure anyone else who’s had the privilege to see it feels so lucky to have been able to, just like I do. I can guarantee a fantastic experience; Luca Torrens is capable of nothing less.

My son’s friend had a show with Luca, and I got to experience this wonderful show. We talked about it for days on end! Loved the music, the jokes, and the style of their show. One of the best show I’ve seen in a while!

THE most laughs I’ve had all year. Filled with suspense, mystery, cowboy essence, and music, this piece has got to be the best piece of short theatre I’ve experienced all year.
