A powerful show of dealing with issues of assimilation and acceptance and the journey to find your place in the world. A brave revelation.
I felt so engaged witnessing Jovan’s charismatic telling of his life story. I experienced tenderness, outrage, grief, compassion, wonder, shock, and amusement. Jovan took me and the audience on a grand journey, both internally and externally. His story sweeps us with him from Haiti to Montreal to New York to Los Angeles and more. While few of us have had such an explicit experience of living with a mask as Jovan had while working as a Michael Jackson impersonator, his search for belonging while desiring so fervently to live as – and be seen as – his authentic self is deeply relatable.
Very evocative telling of the different phases of one man’s immigrant experience. I appreciated how the description of his early childhood experiences informed the choices he made once he came to the US. I wanted to know if he had found some semblance of peace or if he was still “trying” on different “masks” in order to function. Ironically, the “ambiguity” at the end is what makes his story so “compelling.” Thank you for your vulnerability .
An incredible story of one man’s journey from his homeland to the USA. Thank you for your vulnerability and the metaphor of masks that we all use to survive. Really wanted to know the finale…..have you found your true self or are you still searching?
