The San Francisco Fringe Festival will accept applications to perform in the 2022 SF Fringe until March 31, 2022.
FRINGE FESTIVALS
The San Francisco Fringe Festival is part of the “Fringe movement” – a worldwide network of indie theatre festivals. As the name suggest, the movement is about celebrating under-represented voices and those on the margins of the performing arts world.
It’s a festival where anyone can put on any show, without having to pass through a jury. It’s a festival where audiences come for the adventure and the community as much as for the plays themselves. The San Francisco Fringe is proud to be a member of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals (CAFF). Like all CAFF festivals we follow three golden rules:
1. All shows at the Fringe must be chosen at random by lottery, or on a first come/first served basis.
2. 100% of the artist/company’s chosen ticket price is returned to artist/company
3. We will never intervene in the artistic content of participating productions. These are your stories, this is your art.
The 31st Annual San Francisco Fringe Festival will present 84 performances by 21 different theater companies between September 8th and September 17th, 2022. Performers will be selected at a public lottery at 2pm on April 2, 2022 at EXIT Theatre, 156 Eddy Street in San Francisco. The lottery will also be streamed live on the EXIT Theatre YouTube channel and the EXIT Theatre Facebook page. The complete list of winners will also be posted on EXIT Theatre’s website by Wednesday, April 9th.
The SF Fringe is non-censored and is open to all artists. Artists who want to perform in the San Francisco Fringe Festival apply by filling out an ONLINE APPLICATION and paying a $5 application fee. We will accept applications until midnight Pacific Standard Time on Tuesday March 31st, 2022.
Performers selected in the lottery pay a performance fee depending upon the size of the venue they choose, and they receive four performance slots during the festival. The San Francisco Fringe Festival provides fully equipped and professionally staffed theaters and the performing companies receive 100% of their chosen ticket price.
THE SF FRINGE REQUIRES THAT ALL FRINGE COMPANIES PROVIDE:
• A fully prepared, professional, audience-ready, rights-secured production.
• A set ticket price of no more than $15.
• Your own show-specific promotional and publicity materials.
• All your production/travel/royalties/miscellaneous expenses.
* Proof of vaccination for all participating company members.
• All Fringe materials such as contractual, technical, promotional forms on time when requested.
THE SF FRINGE PROVIDES FRINGE PERFORMERS IN STANDARD VENUES:
• Four (4) performance slots in the venue of your choice.
• 100% of your chosen ticket price for full price tickets and $8 for redeemed discounted passes.
• Publicity, tech and general show support from the moment you are accepted in the festival.
• A theater venue outfitted with a rep plot for lighting and basic sound equipment.
• One professional technician that will be with you for every one of your shows.
• Ticket sales and front of house staff including box office and usher.
• “Fringe Central” that is staffed with knowledgeable people that are ready to assist you and the audience.
• Inclusion on the Fringe website, in the Fringe program guide, and in the overall festival publicity.
• Any number of other community related events and updates including opening and closing night parties and The Daily Starr, the newspaper of the festival.
SCHEDULING
The San Francisco Fringe Festival will schedule all performances in the festival. Performances will be between September 8th and September 17th, 2022 with evening performances Tuesdays through Fridays and afternoon and evening performances on Saturdays and Sundays. You will have 15 minutes to load-in and 15 minutes to load-out. The SF Fringe may increase time between shows. The change overs between shows happen in front of an open house with audience members leaving and entering. Considering this, your entire set up for your show must be simple enough to accomplish in that limited amount of time, including sets, props, and costumes.
Performers must be available to perform throughout the entire festival. Performers must also be available for a tech rehearsal in the days before the festival.
VENUES
The 2022 San Francisco Fringe Festival will provide three staffed and equipped theaters as standard Fringe venues. Performers must select their performance venue at the time they apply. If they are selected in the lottery they will be invoiced a Performance Fee depending upon their choice. The Fringe venues and their Performance Fees are:
• EXIT Studio – 36 seats – 60 minute slot – $550
• EXIT Stage Left – 49 seats – 60 minute slot – $600
• EXIT Theatre – 80 seats – 60 minute slot – $750
The venues are attractive theaters in downtown San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood. The EXIT Theatreplex is “Fringe Central” and includes the EXIT Café, the volunteer and hospitality center, and the three theaters.
WHEELCHAIR ACCESS
All of the standard Fringe venues are accessible to audience members in wheelchairs, including the bathrooms. All of the stages are accessible by wheelchairs except for EXIT Theatre which has a 14 inch raised stage accessible by two steps. None of the tech booths are accessible by wheelchair.
TECH REHEARSAL
Each Fringe show will have one short tech rehearsal with your Fringe technician — 2 1/2 hours. We cannot guarantee any additional rehearsal time in the space. Considering this you are limited in the number of light and sound cues you can have.
VENUE SPECIFICATIONS
EXIT Theatre – Standard proscenium with a raised stage (14” rise)
House Size – 80 seats
Stage Size – 30’ long by 12’9” deep (less depending on the masking position)
Lighting – A rep plot with a significant number of specials available and a programmable light board.
Sound – 2 CD players and a stereo mini cable for laptops and iPhones.
Projector – Possible, but not ideal. All projector equipment must be provided by the performer and will have to be loaded in for each show. We do not keep anything in house.
Set and props – This is the best space for larger sets. That being said, you still have to carry everything in and out for each show through our main hallway. You still only have 15 minutes to load in.
Notes – The upstage wall is Brick and can be revealed for your show if you wish. The stage is unfortunately not wheel chair accessible but the house and dressing room are.
EXIT Stage Left – Standard Black Box Theatre
House Size – 49 seats
Stage Size – 18’ long by 19’7” deep (less depending on the masking position)
Lighting – A rep plot with a significant number of specials available and a light board that will be run as a two scene preset.
Sound – 2 CD players and a stereo mini cable for laptops and iPhones.
Projector – The best of the EXIT spaces for Projectors. All projector equipment would have to be provided by the performer and loaded in for each show. We do not keep anything in house. There are several platforms already installed in the house for projectors.
Set and props – This is a fairly small space and there isn’t a lot of room for larger set pieces.
EXIT Studio – Standard Black Box for Theatre
House Size – 36 seats
Stage Size – 13’ long by 17’ deep (less depending on the masking position)
Lighting – A rep plot with a significant number of specials available and a light board that will be run as a two scene preset.
Sound – 2 CD players and a stereo mini cable for laptops and iPhones.
Projector – Possible, but not ideal. Handheld projectors work well because the space is small. There are not any obvious good places for a projector. All projector equipment would have to be provided by the performer and loaded in for each show. We do not keep anything in house..
Set and props – This space is very small and has the least amount of maneuverability.
Notes – This is the most sound proof space we have.
