Mesmerizing! In the spirit of performance art I let go of needing to ‘understand’ or make sense of it. The music, movement and Vanessa’s expressions drew me in.
Laughed until I cried at the Amor segment. There’s a special kind of beauty intermingled with sadness when a facade falls apart and this was painfully delicious.
Speak English’s tough title character broke (it) down in more ways than one.
Theater surveys often ask how likely are you to recommend this performance to your friends? I recommend Speak English knowing some will be scratching their heads saying “I don’t get it.”
***
Some thirty plus years later I still laugh/cry at the absurdity of Rachel Rosenthal’s (Dian Fossey like) trainer trying to get Koko the gorilla to sign – I think therefore I am. And the subsequent meltdown when Koko won’t comply. Vanessa, you join my unforgettable moments by performance artists memory bank.

Both engaging and thought proving. I enjoyed the live physical action as well as what was presented on the screen. The custom changes added to great effect. Really liked how the sounds/music blended into the performance.

The Noon performance of this “uncategorized” show at the SF Fringe Festival on Sunday, Aug 24th, is your last chance to see this original, passionate, and immersive solo performance from Barcelona by the amazing and versatile Vanessa Kamp. While the dialog is minimal, the visual effects, soundtracks, and variety of characters, combine to make this an extraordinary experience.
