Three people do battle over a book
ironically titled Power Without Pain; a man is terrified by the
thought of being washed by a woman in a tub; and Ibsen's Nora
kicks all the dolls out before making her own exit with a
postmodern twist. Each of the four short plays by Ken Prestininzi
that make up this evening has a slight but promising premise.
None of them get developed adequately, however, and some are
little more than clever theatrical in-jokes. Prestininzi acknowledges
his debts to Fornes, Ionesco, and Kantor, but the lessons he's
learned from those masters don't seem to have taken him very far.
Still, there were times I thought some of the pieces might fly in a
more inspired production. Paul Santiago, Shira Burstein, and
Christopher Kuckenbaker do good work, but the performances
and rhythms are generally slack under Prestininzi's direction.
