- Powerfully acted, this Carpe Diem production of the
David Mamet drama builds suspense as it evolves toward its
climactic ending. As student Carol, Danielle Kerley is so evil she's
almost one-dimensional. As professor John, Lawrence Redecker well
portrays the pedant whose fatal flaw is his ambition and whose
nonchalance gets him in big trouble. The only problem with this
play
lies in Mamet's writing: Carol's character is so vindictive (and
without
motivation), it is unbelievable. Still, the tension crackles in
the air in
some of the finest theatrical moments at the Exit this year. The
audience is left in a quandary, as they don't know with whom to
sympathize when the lights go down. And this kind of ambiguity does
what Brecht always wanted the theater to do: to make the audience
think and discuss. (Culwell)
