All in the Family
Imagine you could look back in time and witness your parents' first
date. See how they became the people they did? So is the case for
siblings Wade and June in Dave Garrett's family drama, elegantly
tinged with dark humor. The two kids watch as their father, Buck,
abandons them for a life of minor-league baseball and drinking. When
he returns home to California after an arm injury, their mother,
Elizabeth, gets involved with an unethical preacher and takes on a
new life spreading the word of Jesus, leaving her husband to raise
the two kids. "Never Far From the Tree" brings close and examines
the
often-complicated dynamics of family life and poses the eternal
question: Are we destined to be like our parents? Directed by Laura
Ellen Smith, the skilled cast of four actors exhibit near-perfect
timing as if they were blood relations themselves and drive the play
to a touching and sentimental finale without the Hallmark sap. --
