Every year the Exit Theatre sheds its role as mere
presenter and takes on the producer role for its
Absurdist Season. Local directors jump at the
opportunity to pitch plays to the theater -- past
seasons included such staples as Beckett and
Ionesco. This year's opener is by Jose Rivera,
author of the recently acclaimed play "References
to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot." Set in three New
York burroughs at the turn of the millennium, the
play incorporates magical realism in its exploration
of such issues as the search for love and human
connection. Marisol discovers her physical survival
depends on a guardian angel who leaves her to fight
in the "angel wars," and is subsequently left to fend
for herself in the streets. Anchored by the strong
performances of Anna Maria Luerta as Marisol and
Francis J. McGuire as the man who stalks her, with
the imaginative directing of Jonathan Gonzalez, this
performance is one for lovers of the absurd.
