… and Jesus Moonwalks the Mississippi – “Brilliant!”
by Bussin' Lee Hartgrave

Just for starters, here are few of the elements in …Jesus Walks. Moving waters – touching – violent – heat – gorgeous. This powerful story about the South, racism and an uppity Mistress of a house - like Gone With Wind’s Tara – reveals hidden secrets. Musical influences of “That Sound” bring Glorious moments that bear gifts of something for everyone – from straight Gospel to melodies that have a few old school beats. There is the urge to get up – and swing and sway in the isle.

This play with music has to be one of the most interesting and incredible presentations that I’ve ever experienced. The Actors and the singers (who represent the moving waters of the Mississippi) bring together several emotions: There is Joy, sorrow, remorse, nostalgia, hope and power and in the end sweet victory.

Here is an example of some dialogue: Of course, it really grabs you best when you hear it in person from the actor -- “The wisest fool, always plays the part of the poet!” Many of the characters are widely drawn from mythology, the American Civil War and the Holy Bible.

You have to be there to surround yourself with the over-whelming crescendo of talent. The Story, like the mighty Mississippi will taunt and surround you with undulating emotions.

There is leg slapping to the music – there is moon walking, and the music is so haunting that it literally takes you by the scruff of your neck and drags you into the story.
The Mississippi River has a Gentle roar – but one that you will never forget. These are the Stellar performers: Nicole C. Julien, Aldo Billingslea, Erika A. McCrary, David Sinako, Zac Schuman, David Westley Skillman, Sarah Mitchell, Jeanette Harrison, Martin F. Grizzell, Jr.

The Chorus: Rebecca Frank, Halili Knox, Erica Richardson.

I urge you to see this “unusually Vivid and Convincing play!” You won’t be sorry. It is astounding, powerful and inventive!

The Playwright Marcus Gardley is a wizard with words. The Director Amy Mueller knows how to bring those words to life. Rob Melrose, the artistic director always seems to come up with winners! And this is a big one!
