- In Wendy Weiner's solo show, hapless apartment hunter Diana
forages through the housing madness of NYC in search of the near-impossible:
a room of her own. Needless to say, the tale transfers quite well to our
own
gentrified landscape. Portraying a series of landlords that Diana
encounters, Weiner provides us a hilarious look at the desperation of the
"unhoused" and offers up some wonderfully idiosyncratic characters
in
slacker Ned, who's AstroTurfed his ledge and calls it a "terrace";
real
estate agent Bull, who considers himself an "urban warrior";
and Jewel, a
performance artist who "squats" for $600 a month. Weiner's
a marvelously
expressive performer with impeccable comedic timing, and director Julie
Kramer's minimalist staging provides plenty of room for the actor to shine.
Home sweet home ain't what it used to be, folks, but while we all continue
our search for the one-bedroom-with-hardwood-floors-for-under-a-grand in
the
sky, Weiner reminds us that we're in it together. (Chan)
