How Much Do You Pay for This Place? Of
course, this is one of the most frequently asked
questions in recent San Francisco history. But it's
been standard conversational fare in Manhattan for
years, where apartment hunting involves an even
greater share of tricks, bribes, and stunts than here.
After earning a slot in the Fringe Fest's "Best Of"
series, Wendy Weiner brings her housing-obsessed
solo performance Give Me Shelter back to the Exit
Theater. Diana's fresh off the bus from Iowa, and in
her initiation to the inner workings of New York's
housing crisis, she meets a cast of characters who are
either perfect roommates or potential disasters,
depending on how nice the apartment is. Weiner's
comic portrait investigates the limits of bearable
urban living, the loneliness of life in a crowded city,
and the sacrifices renters make for the perfect
apartment. Give Me Shelter previews tonight at 8
p.m. at the Exit Theater, 156 Eddy (at Taylor), S.F.
Admission is $10; call 541-5008. Tomorrow's 8
p.m. preview benefits artist collective CELL, with a
sliding-scale admission of $10 to 20. The play
continues through March 4.
