Drag queen shows have the potential to be all camp and no
substance, which is perfectly fine, but Sean Owens'
"Girlesque: An 8 1/2 Woman, One Man Show" has the
substance, and enough camp, to make it one of the best
solo performances I've seen to date. Owens portrays eight
women who have been an influence on his early life as a
drag queen, but he doesn't merely rely on his dresses and
sultry singing; he connects each woman through a series
of intelligent, touching monologues that cast a mature --
and not cynical -- point of view. His characters range from a
repressed Sister Mary Nightmare to Agent 12 (battling an
unyielding dress) to an opinionated Carol Channing, with
songs from the humorous to the torch variety, composed
by Don Seaver.
