Family Jewels - The Making of Veronica Klaus
- by Veronica Klaus
-
- review by Robert Avila in SF Bay Guardian March 2005
-
- In her new autobiographical show cocreated with director Jeffrey Hartgraves
and produced by SteinBeck Presents, Veronica Klaus puts the confident,
velvety voice for which she is deservedly known to the story of her exceptional
life, from a turbulent Illinois boyhood to an acclaimed San Francisco-based
career as a cabaret chanteuse. Her frank but witty narrative and engaging
entre-nous style come leavened with a choice selection of songs (including
original material), all of which testify to a passionate individual who
learned to put the art in artifice and the invention in becoming
a transformation in which "reality is a technicality." Our attention
can wane somewhat during the longish first act, but Hartgraves has created
a nimble framework for Klaus's steadily engrossing story, supported by
Topher Busenberg's homey bric-a-brac set and animated lighting design.
