Drowned A noble attempt to
explore themes of xenophobia, alienation, and madness, Mark
Nishimura's Drowned takes on a bit too much for its own good.
These lofty aspirations fall flat, and what we're left with is a stunted,
rambling series of 25 vignettes that talk too much and say too little.
The action centers around the murder of the "immigrant" (who, in
an extremely odd casting choice, is played by blond-haired Janine
Pibal) and its aftermath. The acting is tentative, perhaps because
the language switches from slang to Shakespearean without
explanation or contextual necessity, and the players are wondering
why just as much as the audience is. (Chan)
