They got the beat
BY Robert Avila

A leading voice of the still-beating beat generation, and one of the only women associated with it, Diane di Prima will read from her epic poem Loba this weekend at DivaFest, the Exit Theatre's yearly showcase of art and performance by women. In all her roughly 50 years' worth of poetry, Loba is something like an ongoing magnum opus, a search for a new conception of the feminine that (when Loba: Book I came out in 1978) some called the feminist counterpart to Ginsberg's Howl. (Wolf, howl – there may be something there). Di Prima will concentrate on the as-yet-unpublished Book III portions at DivaFest, so this chance to join a real-live beatnik poetry reading should include more than just the warm sheen of nostalgia.
