THE EXIT THEATER celebrates the
40th anniversary of absurdist Harold
Pinter's The Caretaker, the
tension-filled story of two brothers and
one stranger forced out of isolation
and into a cramped room where
irrationality and angst slowly take hold.
Holding his own unique place in the
absurdist tradition paved by Camus,
Sarte, Brecht, to name a few, Pinter
exposes the preposterousness of the human condition by
combining uncomfortable, almost horrific, situations with
understated language and painful (or painfully funny) silence.
Pinter's ability to turn seemingly banal situations inside out,
emotional guts exposed, has proved him to be one of the most
complex, innovative theatrical voices of the last century. Jason
Ries directs this opening of the "Arbsurdist Series 2000," which
this year has expanded to include original work. Previews
Fri/28-Sat/29, 8 p.m. Opens Fri/28, 8 p.m. Runs Fri.-Sat., 8 p.m.,
Exit Theater, 156 Eddy, S.F. $10-$14. (415) 673-3847. (Dina
