On a seedy block of the Tenderloin, about as far away from
the lights of old Broadway as you can get, resides San
Francisco's premier version of the off-Broadway art house:
Exit Theater. Artistic Director Christina Augello has created
two spaces in the building in which local theater companies
can spread their wings in comparatively stylish comfort (at
least, as far as "black box" theaters go). In addition, each
year the Exit itself produces the increasingly popular San
Francisco Fringe Festival, as well as its own annual "Absurdist
Series." If you're looking to take in some live theater without
heading to New York or London, and without breaking the
bank, look into the Exit — you never know what you'll find.
