Bang!
Just when you thought
fringe theater couldn't get more self-referential, what should
arise but a self-referential fringe show about ... But Bang!, a
new comedy from Art Street Theatre written and directed by
Mark Jackson, has a great deal of fun with the warring egos,
the political pretensions, the tired performance tropes, and
even the audiences of low-rent theater. In the course of a
postshow meeting, cast members of a wretched social
drama pick apart both the play and one another but receive
their ultimate critique from that night's sole audience
member, Eleanor, whose life may or may not have been
changed by their work. Caroline Ford is a delight as the
lonely spectator, and Beth Wilmurt is hilarious as a
timorously assertive actor. Even for a farce, the script makes
some problematic logical leaps, and Jackson pitches the
show at such full volume from the start it has little place else
to go, but it's still a diverting and compact evening.Exit Stage Left, 156 Eddy; 751-5922. $10-15. Fri-Sat and Mon, 8pm. Through March 27.
