- Baby with the Bathwater Exit Stage Left, 156 Eddy; 280-4161.
$7-12. Thurs-Sat, 8pm; Mon/26, 8pm. Through Fri/30. In
the name
of politeness, John (Kevin Campbell) and Helen (Jennifer
York) do
not look at their newborn baby's private parts -- so they
raise their
child without knowing if it is a boy or girl. The mother,
Helen,
guesses that their baby is a girl; after all, she had a
50-50 chance
of making the right choice. Daisy wears bobby socks and
frilly
dresses -- but Daisy (Sean Kelly) is a boy, growing up
discombobulated and out of touch with reality. Campbell
and York
capture the fragility and weariness of new parents but
lack the
rapport to deliver the ribald humor. Kelly is a like a
cool breeze in
the arid landscape of this show, playing a man going through
years
of therapy. With Christopher Durang's clever concept and
witty
script, director Walter Niejadlik's Baby with the Bathwater
has the
potential to be funny but fails to gain the momentum necessary
to
sustain a comedy. (McCauley)
