GRECIAN EARNED
"...Approaching Aeschylus from another angle entirely was Io - Princess of
Argos!, Art Street Theatre's smart, funny, and tuneful take on Prometheus
Bound. Io's a secondary character in the Greek tragedy, but here she's a
cabaret star, singing her sad story. Exiled by her father, seduced by Zeus,
turned into a cow, cursed with a fly buzzing inside her skull, she wanders
through the desert, grappling and eventually coming to terms with the
eternal, existential question: Why? Everything works in this little musical
gem – the catchy songs (music and lyrics by pianist Marci Karr); Mark
Jackson's witty script and airtight direction; David Babich on clarinet and drums;
Beth Wilmurt's emotionally connected, sweet-voiced Io, and the polished
movement and strong voices of the Greek chorus (Kevin Clarke, Loren Nordlund,
and Janet Roitz)."
