- Writer and performer Jacqueline Barnes has a sly, engaging presence,
so it's unfortunate that she's not able to do more with it in this unformed
one-person show based on her journey from a comfortable, if uninspired,
middle-class existence to the trials and tribulations of a semiprofessional
career in the theater. The play seems like a work in progress, with its
confounding transitions, indistinct characters, pseudo-poetic imagery that
doesn't support the story, and rushed, unearned resolution. Even so, this
charming, underworked show feels like a bit of an ugly duckling itself.
Perhaps it will continue to develop over the course of its run, and we'll
see this subtly charismatic actor turn into a swan
