nerdNERD NATION
by Dhaya Lakshminarayanan
produced by DIVAfest
EXIT Studio, 156 Eddy St, SF
November 5 – November 21, 2015

Nerd Nation is the story of Dhaya’s journey (and the journey of the REAL nerds in America) to challenge and change the mainstream narrative about nerds, and to start a movement on stage to make nerd culture cool, glamorous & funny.Comedian and storyteller Dhaya Lakshminarayanan gets audiences laughing as she opens a window into nerd culture with her work-in-progress solo show. “Look, I was a skinny little kid growing up in Birmingham, Alabama. Of course I got bullied for being smart,” said Lakshminarayanan. “But nerds are out and proud now. We have arrived. Well, kind of.” She adds, “We are still a country where Kim Kardashian will always have more name recognition than Neil deGrasse Tyson. Astrophysics still cannot compete with booty, although the sun will always be hotter than Kim.”

“Nerd Nation” follows the evolution (not creation, because nerds believe in science) of Dhaya’s nerd identity. The show also tells the story of other nerds across the country and the role of nerds in modern America. “Nerd Nation” has been sponsored by the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center and was a part of the United States of Asian America Festival 2014 celebrating “The Spaces Between.”

A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a former management consultant and an ex-venture capitalist, Dhaya is also an award-winning comedian and storyteller. She is the host of the monthly Moth StorySlam at Public Works in San Francisco and has performed at San Francisco Sketchfest, Bridgetown Comedy Festival in Portland, the Boston Comedy Festival, and the Women in Comedy Festival in Boston. The Bay Guardian named her “Best Comedian” of 2013 in their Readers’ Poll. Her other credits include winning Comedy Central Asia’s “Ultimate Comedy Challenge” and ON24’s virtual comedy competition. She hosted the first season of the Emmy-winning series High School Quiz Show on WGBH and is a favorite on NPR’s storytelling series Snap Judgment.
